Install WordPress on your local System/Computer

When i first thought of starting my own blog i had two options of the platform on which the blog will run. First one was Blogger which is owned by google and other was the WordPress. At that particular time i wasnt aware much of the know how about Blogs and its management.

I started both with WordPress.com and Blogger for my first blog Avinashteh.  I started with few posts both on wordpress and blogger. But then later on i found i cant have full control over my blog on WordPress.com as its doesnt allow all features that a self owned (hosted on a paid server e.g. on shared hosting ) and hence i shifted to Blogger fully.

One of the reasons i shifted to blogger was that i was almost blank on how to use wordpress fully. Initially it was like, i wasnt even aware of whats difference between a wordpress.com & wordpress.org along with whats a paid hosting. I tried to find out how the diff options like plugins and themes worked but couldnt get full satisfaction on wordpress.

Then after few months on blogger which allowed me more control on my blog, i started to feel crippled by the options available on it compared to wordpress. Till then i had collected a good enough knowledge of wordpress and hence thought of shifting to wordpress platform.

I moved whole of my blogger blog to wordpress platform on a paid host. The story is more but i will stop this story here.

Now i will talk about how to install WordPress locally on your system so that you can test your blog before making it available online without any errors.

As we are talking about local installation of wordpress here on your system, first thing we need to do is to convert your system to a webserver first. Dont go over the server name, its not that hard as it sound.

For converting your system to a webserver , you need a tool with which you can run your system as webserver. Its possible using Wampserver. This includes everything thats required for you to run a server on your system  including phpMyAdmin, SQLiteManager, Apache etc.

You can download latest version of Wampserver here. image_menu_wamp

First thing you need to do after installing Wampserver is to start Wampserverand then create a database using phpMyadmin by clicking on wampserver in system tray and then on phpMyadmin.

database_wordpress

Create a database as shown in pic above with the settings as shown. After database is created, just click tab Privileges and you will see a option of add new user. Click on it.

wordpress-database-user

On clicking it, you will see the window as shown below. Create a user name and password and other settings as shown in screenshot below. Tick all the options using “check all” option.

Thats all. YOu are now ready to install wordpress on your system now.

Step by Step Instructions for WordPress Installation:

  1. Download the latest version of wordpress and save it on your computer’s hard drive.
  2. Simply unzip or extract the downloaded wordpress package on your hard disk.
  3. Create a MySQL database for the wordpress on your web server (you have already done that above).
  4. Once you have created the database, have a look at the unzipped wordpress files. Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.
  5. Now that the file has been renamed, you should open the wp-config.php file in the text editor and then fill the required details of the database. (Right click on the file and select “Open With” in the popup windows menu. Then select to open the file with Notepad or Wordpad).wp-config
  6. Now, store these wordpress files in the desired or decided location of the web server (usually the main folder C:wampwww).
  7. With your browser, go to http://localhost:8888/wp-admin/install.php and follow the instructions to install WordPress. If it gives a error, try using http://localhost/wp-admin/install.phpinstall-wp
  8. So you are almost done. Put your blog title and click on Install wordpress. On next page , you will find user name and password created by wordpress for your system blog created automatically by WordPress install.
  9. After that you can login in wordpress using http://localhost/wp-admin/

I hope , this article will help anyone of you who want to play with wordpress before fully starting a Blog.

If you have installed everything correctly it should work. May be you should just check if you have put wordpress files in right directory.

Otherwise you can browse directly to install directly and run install.php, it will work if your wamp server is running.

How about using Bitnami? It is so simple, works just like installing another application to windows.
